Giant Bottle Flowers!

About a year ago I saw this huge bottle flower in Durham, NC. Did not have the camera with me, but promised myself I'd return with a camera. It was a nice cloudy day and I  was close by with some free time and I finally took some photos for your enjoyment. Just might have to get my plumber buddy who enjoys working with scrap steel and a welder make us one of these.
I wondered how the bottles were installed as you do not want water getting inside, the water freezes and breaks the bottles. Now I know the artist welded in lag screws which you screw into corks to hold the bottles in.  believe this is the best bottle art I have seen.... We have enough blue bottles saved to make 6 of these I'd guess.

Finally R. L. Wheeler camellia opened up in the garden today! Bad news is tonight it is dropping down to 20 degrees. Think I'll cover it with a sheet to protect the other unopened buds. Got to say this flower has an array of stamens unlike any other camellia in our garden. The bees will love this one for sure. Today it is too windy and cold for the bees to enjoy the nectar in it.

Thanks for sharing the bottle flower. Love it and plan to make one.

I intend to put a camellia in my yard, but the ones I've tried in the past haven't been successful. They have been 2 cuttings from a friend's bush that just haven't tolerated the transplantation and a little bush a friend had shipped to me that simply didn't make it. I am becoming less and less a fan of mail order plants, even though my blueberries still live.

I really like the bottle flowers.

There's a house in Hillsborough that has a couple of cedars that have been cut back to make bottle trees. We pass it going down King Street on our way to WSM from home. And another converted tree on Old 86 going to Carrboro from I-40.

I find that I like that way of making a bottle tree, or a metal one, much better than the ones I see that are wooden posts with dowels stuck in them.

There's a cedar back in my woods that may be in danger.

I really like those bottle flowers, what a great addition to a garden. Like them over the typical bottle tree.
Your tie-dyed Camellia bloom is lovely.

Just showed Charlie the bottle flower, he likes it. We are trying to think about a way to do one in our garden. :-) Thanks for sharing this.

Everyone,
Blue bottles might become a little more common. Today I found about 24 blue beer bottles. Bud Light Platinum just released in in blue cobalt bottles. Personally I don't care for bud light, but will enjoy seeing more blue bottles out there.

I made a bottle tree using a 4-5 inch diameter treated pole for the trunk then drilled and inserted wood dowels. No welding needed. The necks of the bottles all pointed downward so no water got inside. An added feature was running white Christmas lights inside the bottles on the dowels only, blacking out any lights that may be on the outside of bottles. Used green wine bottles and looked really cool at night.

It's great. I like the mix of green and blue bottles.

Interesting bottle blooms Randy. Oh, I hope your lovely Camellias will not suffer from the cold! It is lovely too . . . to see green grass alive in your part of the world. Or is it??

Hi Randy, yes, I did see the Bud lite blue bottle comment. We will check that out. thanks!

Thanks you showed us your bottle flower model, i've been waiting for yours to be posted. What about the final display of those in the pond? I can also visualize the comment above by Sinbad, i am sure it is also amazing, knowing your creativity with many things, can you make one of your bottle stands with the lights in?

I'm not always a huge fan of bottle art, but I really like the look of these bottle flowers with their slightly arching stems. I expect the bees will prefer the Camellias though ;) Our bees our roaring, and before today's rain we were wondering if we should try for an early split. Both hives are already producing drones, a sure sign they're gearing up for swarming!

The next time I read a blog, I hope that it doesn't disappoint me just as much as this one. After all, Yes, it was my choice to read through, but I actually thought you would have something interesting to talk about. All I hear is a bunch of crying about something you could possibly fix if you weren't
too busy seeking attention.
