Moving up on the Internet!

This week DSL became available here finally. We are no longer out in the "country". For the past 4 years we have used Wild Blue Satellite for our internet provider. Rain would kill it and to get barely enough bandwidth we paid $70 a month  for this crappy service. Tonight after calling them yesterday (Wild Blue took weeks to get hooked up) we are online with a 3MB connection at least 4-5 times faster than before. And all the bandwidth we want, Netflix look out! Saving money too, the landline and DSL cost $60 a month, so we are saving $35 a month. Looking forward to canceling Wild Blue in the morning!

Gardening News:

Sunday we put out the bird feeders and are now using local, yes I said local black oiled sunflower seeds. The platform feeder which was already in the garden had birds in about 2 minutes. The new locations for two of the feeder took maybe 15 mins.

Today I found a Carolina Chickadee on the porch railing, it must have been stunned as I touched its beak with a piece of orange and it did not fly away or want the orange.

The hard freeze(28 this morning) finally dropped the rest of the plants including the rosebud saliva which was still blooming. The blooms on the two camellias blooming were not effected. Kanjiro and Pink Butterfly each have 10-15 blooms on them.

The cold frames I picked mustard greens tonight to add to our salad. Kale and Rape should be picking pretty soon. Green outside the cold frames are doing fine, but not growing as fast as in the cold frames.

Hi Randy, i am looking for your photos, you got nice internet connection now but your camera is not working, hehe. I did not know there are still areas in the US which is not as efficient as the rest of the areas.

Its freezing outside and the camera is out in the little car. So the next post will have photos.

I understand your glee with having internet DSL!! We have had problems with our DSL since we moved to SC. I think it is finally fixed, but the thought of going to satellite was way too $$. We have satellite TV and know the issues with weather.
Hope the little Chickadee is ok, we have had more birds lately with the cold weather.

Congrats on the DSL! Of course, that too will seem slow after a little while; I'm always amazed how fast I adapt.

I'm starting to think about a bird feeder myself, the fountain isn't working and without that sound, we have far fewer visitors at the baths.

Thanks for reading and commenting everyone. I just cancelled the Wild Blue, seems it is paid up through December and no refunds.

Got to head out to work. Just got a kick out of watching 3 Titmice spinning on the hanging bird feeder. They were flying in and out and got it spinning pretty good! Pretty funny as it was making a revolution a second or so and they still managed to catch the tiny perches.

Good for you Randy. I cannot imagine being without the internet... a way of life for reading, research...

I have been delinquent in getting the feeders up; in fact the little chickadees came to visit 2 days ago, checking out the suet feeder that has yet to be filled. We are trying to figure out how we can place it so it is not vandalized and emptied overnight. Thanks for the reminder

Congratulations on your increased bandwidth! I wish it was available where I live What we have now is faster than dailup but slower than dsl. We have bandwidth restrictions too, no netflix for us:(
Thanks for the comment on my blog about growing kiwi's. The vine I seeded is hardy for zone 3 so I assume it needs a much shorter growing season than the one your are growing. My growing season might be 100 days.

Hey Randy, we just got Verizon Fios installed yesterday..for our tv, phone and internet. We are fast! Comcast just wasn't working for us any longer. We aren't out in the boonies so it must be tough in that regard...but DSL is definitely a step up from what you had. Yay!
We've had temps in the mid-20's a few nights too...and my Foxglove is still going strong. I can't understand why!! I thought for sure it would be toppled over but no...it looks like it's still in its prime!
Nature never ceases to bring us unexpected surprises and delights. I wish I had a Camelia!

You're going to let a little thing like freezing temperatures keep you from taking pictures? What kind of nature blogger are you?!! :)

Grats on your new Internet connection!

You'll enjoy your internet ease and speed.

Thanks for the reminder I need to get out tomorrow, pick some kale, and see if the salad mix that was a few inches tall is still alive to harvest.
