The addition was finished over two years ago and the wood stove was supposed to be done then, but the construction budget was maxed out and the stove was omitted. Meg has always been wanting a wood stove so when the power goes out we'd have heat. Hurricanes can hit the area here and power could be out for weeks, usually in late summer or fall. Then there are ice storms that can kill the power for a few days or so.
Here is the living room as the chimney was being installed.
The wood stove just after installing it. This stove is highly efficient it will burn for 8 hours without any help they say. It is made by Hampton. Notice the cooking surface on the top of the stove!
Meg did the honors of lighting the first fire in the stove.
Kale, mustard greens and rape from our cold frames today.
I love my wood fire in the winter. Being able to see the flames makes me feel coxy. Pull up a chair, a book or bit of sewing - Winter bliss. If we use good hardwood (in our case redgum), get the fire burning well and turn it down we can get more than 12 hours out of ours. The record...to just small coals was 15 hours. The trick is to fill the fire box right up with good wood. Wishing you toasty toes!
ReplyDeleteI love wood stoves. We used to have one. Dried beans or a stew are great
ReplyDeletecooked on it. Helen
I love our wood stove, enjoy!
ReplyDeleteGreat stove and living room! Congrats on your 200th post too!
ReplyDeleteWe heated exclusively with a wood stove for years in the early 1980s when oil was so expensive. The children all dressed in front of the stove and loved to make pallets on the floor in front of it to read in the evening. Even after we had it removed we'd stand with our backs to the fireplace as if it would still warm us. We've moved since then and now have gas logs but those were some good years with that wood stove. I know you'll enjoy yours.
ReplyDeleteI love it! I grew up in a home heated with a wood stove. It gave off a heat that would instantly warm you. I wish we had one. Enjoy it when the snow comes this week! Carla
ReplyDeleteLooks like you got your stove at the right time, Sunday night and Monday are due to be quite wintery.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your 200th post. I have missed a number of milestones on my blog lately. Oh well.
Congratulations on post #200. And congratulations on the stove, looks so cozy.
ReplyDeleteHi Randy, oh… that does look very welcoming and warm. Enjoy it!
ReplyDeleteI‘d take a guess that the long length of chimney to the ceiling will give heat too. I can understand why Meg has fancied getting one… especially as I look out at snow again here. Yay… the forecast is for rain here, fingers crossed it washes the snow from the roads.
Congrats on you 200th post, that’s a lot of great photos you’ve uploaded! Wishing you a good week :-D
Wow, those greens look great (mine - not under cover - aren't looking so good).
ReplyDeleteAnd the wood stove looks like it will be an excellent addition.

Congrats on the 200th post and on the woodstove.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on #200!
ReplyDeleteThat is a very tall chimney! When we are installing airconditioners to keep our abodes a bit habitably cooler, you are installing heaters. The unbalanched world indeed!
ReplyDeleteYour mustard greens look yummy . . . like your mustard wall. Warm with the stove, which sounds like a great one. You will be thankful for the stove when the power goes out! Is that an insulated pipe all the way down?
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I love the color of this big wall! I am starting to paint feeling tremulous about the color I chose, as it is similiar to this. But now that I see it, WOW! I looks great.
ReplyDeleteMy husband would be so envious of that stove and the fact that you can cook on it. I bet it will serve you well.
How wonderful to have fresh greens in the middle of winter!
Congrats on your 200th post!
Loving that wood stove. What a tall stove pipe!
ReplyDeleteAhhhhh.....I'm jealous of your greens. We have some lettuce growing in our cold frame, but not ready to harvest yet.
Nice! I wish we had room for one. It's a great idea for supplemental heat when you need it!
